Points & Switch Machines
Points Condition Monitoring (PCM) measures key parameters related to the performance of switch machines and turnouts in real time at every movement. Intelligent analysis of the data collected allows the system to identify deterioration in condition - before a failure occurs. This provides a vital time-frame in which maintenance work can be scheduled to restore full performance. In the longer term, the additional information on asset health can also support a more proactive and targeted approach to maintenance.
Sensors are installed in the infrastructure, at the track, or more often inside the signalling equipment cabinet or building to measure key parameters relating to asset condition and performance - for example, switch machine motor current, relay status, or optionally, power supply voltage. The sensors are connected to an isolated data logger which processes and packages the data for transfer to a server - either over a fixed network or wirelessly using a 3G/GPRS connection. The server stores data in a central database, and analyses each point movement to identify any abnormal behaviour and raise an alarm if appropriate. Users can access the server over the internet from a standard PC to view alarm logs and graphical profiles of point movements.
In comparative trials to compare system performance and accuracy, the CDSRail PCM system has consistently outperformed other products both in terms of earlier warning of failure and reliable alarm information.
